DIY Kids' Snowmen Craft: Perfect for baby's first Christmas

We've been busy little elves around here getting some DIY projects finished before Christmas. Here's the first one... snowmen that are the same height as Carter. How cute are these?!

These are super easy and inexpensive to make. All three cost me less than $15 combined. Here's what you'll need:

  • wooden fence post {about $4 each at Home Depot for a 5 foot post, which you can cut down to your chid's height}
  • white paint
  • black paint
  • hot glue
  • craft foam
  • buttons
  • hat and scarf {hint: get creative! I made these hats out of dog jackets, but socks also work well}
  • poem printable {download for free here}

The first step was cutting the boards down to Carter's height (28.5 inches). You can have them cut at the store if you don't have a saw at home. I opted to lightly sand the boards because they were a tiny bit prickly. You know, being wood and all. ;) Then it took two coats of white paint to get full, even coverage.

After that, it was time to decorate. I cut out orange foam by hand in roughly a carrot shape. Not feeling confident? Head to Google Images here and print any of these to trace. I laid the nose out onto the snowmen to roughly line up the hats and scarves.

The scarves were from the Dollar Store (plaid) and Target dollar spot (blue snowflakes). I couldn't find hats that I loved. I've previously used fuzzy socks, but couldn't find the perfect pattern in those either. So while digging around at Target in the dollar spot, I found these little fleece dog jackets for $3. I slid them onto the snowmen, rolled up the edges, and tacked them in place with the hot glue.

Then I tied thread around the dog jackets to make a bundle of fabric, cut off the excess, and cut fringe to make the little puffs on top of the hats. I hot glued the noses and buttons in place.

Now comes the really fun part... Carter's artwork! I used acrylic paint and Carter's tiny fingerprints to make the nose and eyes. This was definitely a two-person job, so I called in my husband for backup.

One more shameless baby picture. Carter was very serious about his artwork! His fingerprints are pretty small, so we swirled them around for the eyes to make them bigger. I thought about using his toe print for that one instead, but opted for quick and easy.

Look how cute they turned out! I love how each one is unique.

The final step is to add on a cute little poem, which I attached to the back of the scarf.

How precious did they turn out? I know we will treasure these for years to come, and they'll make perfect gifts for the grandparents too. I can't wait to stand Carter up beside his next year!

Thanks to Mrs. Wills' Kindergarten for the great idea!

The other quick craft we did? Mistletoes! His feet are so big compared to when we first started crafting with them back in March, and his little tiny fingerprints are so precious. Super easy too!

9 Months, Happy Inside/Outside Day!

We did it, buddy... 9 months!

We celebrated inside/outside day, where you were officially spent just as much time in my tummy as you have out of it. 38 weeks in/38 weeks out. You are so big and I am so thankful to be your momma.

Everyone always says what a little chunk you are, probably because you love to eat. You usually eat off our plates, but you got your very first kids' meal at Broken Egg Cafe this month. Daddy ate your bacon, but you killed the waffle and about half of the eggs. Then you knock your plate on the floor when daddy wasn't looking. I guess you were finished. ;)

You continue to be my favorite little buddy. Playing in our bed every morning is your favorite. You are so feisty!

Daddy took you to get your first haircut. I might have cried a tiny bit when you came home because you looked so much older. You also took your first ride in a swing.

You are obviously a big helper when you go to the hardware store with daddy.

But you love shopping with me too. Here you helped pick out a bunch of Christmas presents and a book for yourself. You carried it through the whole store and maybe snacked on it a little too. Yum!

You are into everything. Crawling all over, playing with the dog toys, and riding our floor cleaner. Also, you love to stand. Forget sitting! In fact you are in to stuff so much that momma had to fence you in, fortunately you don't mind.

You celebrated your first Thanksgiving at Mamaw and Poppy's house. You did such a good job being away from home for 4 nights! They bought you new toys to play with and everything.

It's also your first Christmas season! We picked out our own Christmas tree, visited Santa, and played with Christmas lights. You were mesmerized!

We love you so much, little man!

What's new this month:
-More teeth! Carter is up to six teeth because two more came in on top this month. No fun!
-He has mastered crawling up on his knees, but he would rather pull up and stand instead.
-He's cruising around his fenced play yard. He tries to cruise furniture, but randomly lets go and falls.
-He graduated to kids' meals at restaurants instead of just eating off our plate.
-We bumped his bouncer up to the final notch. He's getting ready to size out of it!
-He's still in 9-12 month clothes, but moved up to size 4 diapers.
-Carter got his first haircut. It was so needed!
-We cut down our first Christmas tree as a family of three!
-He spent his first nights away from home when we visited Mamaw and Poppy for Thanksgiving!

It's Great To Be Eight

Baby man, you are getting toooo big too fast!

You are also determined to crawl out of mama's photoshoots.

Carter loves, loves, loves to eat. That's probably why he's almost 22 pounds, ha! He enjoys feeding himself and sitting in the highchair with us at restaurants. He's also discovered samples at the grocery store, where he especially loved mashed potatoes.

Carter also loves hanging with daddy.

During the day, he keeps momma super busy. He's sitting and pulling up on everything, which means he sometimes has to go into baby jail while I get stuff done. ;)

We also had our family pictures taken for our Christmas cards. Love how they turned out!

Carter loves books, which makes my teacher heart happy!

We also celebrated Carter's first Halloween.

By far, he has the most personality ever! It's so fun watching him grow and develop. Here's my favorite video of the month. =)

You can follow all of our adventures over on Instagram.

What's new this month:
-His top two teeth came in, so we're up to 4 teeth now.
-He weighs in at an impressive 21.8 pounds!
-He's a lightening fast crawler, but still drags his belly. He especially loves trying to get my power cord from under the couch and the dog food.
-He sits up on his own and is starting to pull up on e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g without help.
-He's ditched his infant "bucket" carrier and enjoys riding in the shopping cart.
-He loves eating out with us, sitting in the high chairs, and feeding himself.
